My first taste of Italian wedding soup came in high school when I worked in a Cafe after school and sampled all the soups constantly. I was fascinated by eating tiny meatballs in a soup. I always order Italian wedding when out, but never thought to make my own until last week when I was hit with a horrible sore throat. I made several changes to this recipe, including substituting spinach with kale, pasta with white navy beans, adding 2 small chopped potatoes, generous sprinkles of cayenne pepper and replacing 1/2 the chicken stock with water. I've been eating leftovers all week and it's officially my new "feel better" meal.

Weekend Pleasures

This weekend was the sort of weekend I wish would never end.

Friday and Saturday were spend going for walks, watching movies, ordering pizza and making fresh guacamole. Our new bedside tables finally made their debut, after being backordered for months, giving me a whole new project of organizing and sorting. And early Sunday morning my parents came into the city to take us and my brother out for breakfast, where we all indulged in cheesy omelettes, crunchy hash browns and crispy bacon.

The best part? My mom brought me a tray of her eggplant parm and a whole carrot cake for us to enjoy this week, along with some too-cute-to-eat Valentine's treats.

Winter Wishes

Good Morning Loves!

For the first time in months, I see light at the end of this freezing cold tunnel. We're looking forward to spending a few weeks in Florida at the end of the month, and I don't think I've ever been more excited to go! Thoughts of spending time with my mother in law, indulging in cuban food (my fav) and being able to take walks outside without multiple layers will be getting me through the next couple of weeks.

When you are feeling under the weather and your city is covered in ice, hot soup is the only way to go.

I honestly never knew that I liked minestrone, until I had it at my aunt's house a couple weeks ago; and when I heard how simple it was to make, I stocked up on the ingredients and made a batch that could feed a small army.

I used this recipe, and used dried lentils instead of the mixed beans.

I ordered these trouser jeans a few days ago and when they arrived yesterday, I fell in love. The fit is perfectly flattering in all the right places, and they are a gorgeous lightweight semi-stretch denim. I ordered long since I am 5'10 and they more than touch the ground. For $70 how can you resist?!

I expected this weekend to be crazy, with my Goddaughter's 3rd birthday party, finishing up my shopping, and the wrapping of gifts I've been buying since October. To my surprise it was the opposite. Chocolate Almond Cranberry Bark

Chocolate bark is one of those treats that usually turn up at Holiday parties, and I'm always reminded of how much I love it. Whether it's filled with assorted nuts, dried fruit or chopped pretzels, the result is always festive and fun to eat. The cranberries in these add a pretty touch of color and the almonds offset the sweetness of the chocolate perfectly. They turned out so delicious, I decided to bag them up to accompany Christmas gifts for my family.

A fabulous and easy recipe for any holiday get together!

Recipe:
12 oz dark chocolate
5 oz chopped almonds
5 oz chopped dried cranberries
1/2 cup heavy cream

Melt chocolate over double boiler, stirring constantly (5 minutes)
Add heavy cream as you stir.
Mix in chopped almonds and cranberries.
Pour into foil lined container and refrigerate overnight.
Remove from foil, chop and serve.
Yields approx 15 pieces.

Lately, this is my meal of choice when going out for italian, and making it at home is easier than I thought. I made this dish for my family's visit last weekend and it went so fast, I hardly got to snap any pics! I would definitely recommend trying the unusual combo of cheeses and substituting with turkey sausage. It's a really fun and delicious take on my favorite italian staple.

I definitely don't need another excuse to love the holidays, but these fun cocktails give me just that. Whether you are spicing up your hot chocolate or adding peppermint and crushed candy ice to your martini, these holiday libations are sure to make you feel festive!

1. Cuppa Good Cheer

Ingredients 1.5 oz.SKYY® Infusions Cherry 0.5 oz.white creme de cacao 4 oz.Hot Cocoa 1 oz.Half 'n Half Whipped Cream Maraschino Cherry
Directions Combine all ingredients into a holiday mug and top with whipped cream, red sprinkles and a Maraschino Cherry.

2. Hard Rocker Cider

Ingredients 1 cupCabo Wabo Reposado Tequila 4 cupsApple Cider 1 cupCranberry juice ¼ cupOrange Liqueur 1 teaspoonNutmeg cinnamon stick
Directions In a pot or crockpot, heat and stir cider, cranberry juice cocktail, and nutmeg on low just until hot for 2 hours. Do not boil. When ready to serve, turn on high for 10 minutes and stir in tequila and liqueur. Garnish with a cinnamon stick. Servings: 6

3. Candy Cane Swirl

Ingredients 1 oz.SKYY® Infusions Raspberry 3 oz. RedCranberry juice 0.5 oz.Grenadine 0.5 oz.Grenadine Lemon Lime soda
Directions Rim martini glass with crushed candy cane. Combine SKYY Vodka, Peppermint Schnapps, Cranberry Juice and Grenadine into a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously and strain into martini glass. Top with Lemon Lime Soda and garnish with small peppermint candy cane.

4. Midnight Kick

Ingredients 2 oz.Cabo Wabo Añejo Tequila Orange Slice Cinnamon
Directions Wet the rim of a chilled shot glass with the orange slice. Then rim the shot glass with powdered cinnamon on a plate. Be careful not to turn the glass right side up until it has been rimmed. The orange liquid will drip otherwise. Shake the Cabo Tequila with ice in a shaker and strain into the chilled shot glass. Slam the shot and then bite into the orange slice to finish.

5. The Ninth Night

Ingredients 2 oz.SKYY® Infusions Citrus 1 oz.Triple Sec 1 oz.Cranberry juice Lemon Lime soda Lime Juice
Directions Combine SKYY Infusions Citrus, Triple Sec and Cranberry Juice into a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously and strain into tall rocks glass with fresh ice. Top with soda and lots of fresh lime juice. Garnish with blue ribbon or pipe cleaner around the glass.

6. Red Hot Chocolate

Ingredients 1 oz.Campari 2 oz.Brandy 3 oz.Milk 0.5 oz. (optional)Heavy Cream 2 tablespoonsChocolate Chip
Directions Put milk, cream & chocolate in a milk frothing cup used for espresso. Froth milk as you would for cappuccino. When milk is hot remove frothing wand and whisk or stir vigorously until chocolate is completely melted. Add Campari and Brandy. Pour into heat-resistant cup. Can be garnished with 1 large hand-cut marshmallow or a red peppermint stick. All recipes via

For my dinner party Tuesday night, mentioned here, I wanted to make a birthday cake for my friend that was sure to be unexpected.

You all know my love for cream cheese frosting, so if the recipe includes it, I'm making it. I decided on this two layer Carrot Pineapple cake, that did not disappointment. My only regret was feeding my guests so much for dinner that we could barely fit dessert!

Crystal Skull Vodka

I'm not particularly into skulls, or vodka for that matter; but when I saw this Crystal Skull Vodka in my local liquor shop's window yesterday, I was sold.

I convinced my husband we needed it, (for our guests who drink vodka) and we could always re-use the bottle later on. The power of packaging design has a pretty strong hold on me :)

About the Vodka: A quadrupled distilled vodka, filtered three times through charcoal followed by triple filtration over Herkimer crystals. Skull bottle designed by John Alexander and manufactured by master artisans in Milano's Bruni Glass Company.

My husband has a friend in town this week, and so I'm on my best hostess behavior, making sure they have plenty of treats to snack on throughout their day.
When I saw this recipe on Smitten Kitchen, I kept it open and made it that same night. My house flooded with smells of cinnamon and apple and sweet cream cheese icing.
They both loved it and needless to say, the cake was gone by breakfast.

Georgetown Cupcake

My first trip to Georgetown Cupcake was highly anticipated. I had been hearing about it for months through Annie and carefully studied the menu before arriving. It was so tough to choose just one, but I finally settled on pumpkin spice with cream cheese frosting. It was magical. I could have eaten 10 of them. Mu husband went for coconut, also with cream cheese frosting. It was gobbled so fast, I didn't even get a bite:)

Artichoke Pasta

I should start by saying that I make some form of this stir-fry, pretty much every week. My best friend and fellow blogger, Annie, shared this recipe with me when we were in high school and used to cook it with her Mom. It's just as delicious today as it was back then.
I can never get tired of the artichoke-pepper combo tossed with pasta and garlic. I usually add grilled chicken, broccoli and this time, capers. Delish!

Last weekend was a busy one for New York City.
We had the wine & food festival, tours of the undeveloped High Line Park and Open House NY.
It was a jam-packed weekend but I woke up Sunday morning craving some Fall activities {whatever that means.} I had visions of candied apples, fun crafts and hot cider running through my mind.
After an hour of searching my nyc resources, I was able to track down a "Fall" themed festival just West of Times Square, that I immediately dragged my husband and brother too. Turns out, there was nothing "Fall" themed about it, except for one booth serving all the items listed above. I got my candied apple and enjoyed it thoroughly, even as they mocked me in all my "Autumn" glory.

Hot Chicken Chili

My reasons for loving cool weather go on and on and on, but I must admit that food is high on the list.
This meal came in handy last week when it was cold and rainy in New York and we desperately needed something to warm us up without going out.
I adapted this recipe, substituting beef with chicken, beef broth with beer and added 2 jalepenos. The best part? You'll have leftovers for days.

This weekend was the kind of weekend I've been longing for. New York was perfectly crisp, allowing me to wear my new leather jacket out for drinks on Friday night and cozy enough for me to stay in the kitchen for the better part of Sunday. Aside from preparing bruschetta, (our Sunday ritual) I needed a treat to enjoy while watching my Sunday night shows.

I whipped up these deliciously moist and decadent blondies in no time and they were the sweetest end to a perfect weekend.

Peach+Banana Muffins

For my husband, it's a huge treat to have baked goods in the house. We are no strangers to going out for sweets, but as far as what we keep stocked in the house, it's pretty healthy stuff.

Since I often have to trick him to eat healthier, I packed these muffins full of fruit and reduced the sugar, hoping he would never know the difference.
I was right :)

Note: I used 4 bananas and added one large chopped peach to the wet mixture. I reduced sugar by half, since the peach was bursting with sweetness.
